My Story

My first home brew session, in September of 2010, was loosely based on Green Flash's "West Coast IPA", but also included some fresh hops which I had grown in my back yard in NE Portland. I brewed this beer with my first brewing partner, Ian Zhang, originally from New York. We had fun, but the brew session was a disaster. I had no idea what I was doing, and Ian really didn't, either - so I took to calling the beer "TrainWreck IPA" during the session. Three weeks and a few more mishaps later, I kegged and force carbonated and chilled the beer, and it tasted... fantastic! I was hooked, and TrainWreck Brewing began to develop in my mind.

TrainWreck can be thought of in many ways - a disaster, a mishap, something crazy, maybe something funny, maybe something big and bold and so different that it might be hard to understand - I wanted to brew many beer styles, but I was especially interested in high gravity beers and recipes that involved unusual ideas. Hence were born beers like the TrainWreck Brewing WildFire Wheat - with cinnamon, honey, a little chocolate, and melanoidin for the most beautiful red color I've ever seen; the SinkHole Imperial Stout - with vanilla beans, coffee beens, cocoa nibs, and red pepper flakes soaked in spiced rum; and the TrainWreck Brewing "Act of God" Triple IPA, coming in at 12.5% ABV and utilizing an ungodly amount of hops...

In 2016, TrainWreck Brewing and a Chinese business partner opened the Iron Horse Tap House in Luoyang, China, and served TrainWreck beer and other local and international beers until late 2019. Blog: https://trainwreckbrewingchina.wordpress.com/

The next chapter of TrainWreck Brewing will be in Portland, Oregon, and Taipei, Taiwan.
